Description
LAMANDÉ (François-Laurent). Stone bridge to be built over the Seine, in Rouen. Deuxième devis des ouvrages; précédé d'un Mémoire sur les projets proposés, sur les moyens de construction, et sur la situation des travaux au 1er janvier 1813. Paris, Goeury, 1815.
In-4 of [2] ff. 135 pp. and a large folding plate (section, details of the foundations and site plan of the future Pont Corneille). Green half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated (post. binding). A few small brown spots.
The stone bridge was envisaged as early as 1789 by the Ponts chief engineer François-Laurent Lamandé (1735-1819) and Pierre Drappier, and confirmed following Napoleon I's visit in 1810. The works, which lasted from 1813 to 1829, were visited by Empress Marie-Louise in the very first year. The Île Lacroix district owes its origins to the construction of this bridge.
The bridge consists of two flights of three arches spanning the river. At the tip of Île Lacroix, in the middle of the bridge, a median strip has been laid out. A 15-metre high lighthouse was initially planned, followed by the Obelisk of Louqsor, and finally a column commemorating the capture of the Trocadero. Finally, in 1834, a bronze statue of Corneille by Pierre-Jean David d'Angers was installed.
Called the "Pont de Pierre" when it was built, it took on several names over time: the "Pont Circonflexe" (because of its shape), the "Pont d'Angoulême", the "Pont d'Orléans" in 1830 before becoming the "Pont Corneille" in 1848.
On 9 June 1940, the French engineers destroyed it as the German army entered the town.
Rebuilt as the "Pont Pierre-Corneille" with a railing designed by Raymond Subes, the bridge was inaugurated on 19 July 1952. The statue of Corneille is installed in front of the Théâtre des Arts. (source Wikipedia.)
