Description
LANGLOIS (Eustache-Hyacinthe). Notice sur l'incendie de la cathédrale de Rouen occasionné par la foudre, le 15 septembre 1822 et sur l'histoire monumentale de cette église, orné de six planches par E.-H. Langlois, du Pont-de-l'Arches. Rouen, [sn], 1823.
In-8 green half-chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt title, covers preserved (post. binding).
Complete with 6 engraved plates hors texte.
"Of this work, 100 copies have been printed on jesus vellum paper (most of them pitted, having been bound too freshly) and 100 on ordinary vellum paper. In some of these copies there are 2 col. plates - Langlois has not confined himself here to giving curious details of the disaster of 15 Sept. 1822, he describes with scrupulous fidelity the monuments of this basilica on which he publishes a host of instructive details drawn from the best sources. This work was originally intended as a report to the King, which had been requested from Langlois by the archbishop of Rouen, Mgr de Bernis, but following his custom, Langlois, indulging in his subject, gave it the scope of a volume." Frère, II, 150. Ex-libris JM.
