[LE LIEUR (Jacques)]. [Le Livre des Fontaines de la Ville de Rouen]. sl, sd.
Late 19th century manuscript copy of the text of the Cours des Fontaines de Rouen en 1525. In-4, 103 pp. in neat handwriting in brown ink, title in cartouches drawn and enhanced. Green half calf, smooth spine, title in gilt lettering throughout, gilt fillet (period binding).
In 1519, Jacques LE LIEUR (c. 1480, c. 1550), a councillor of the city of Rouen, was commissioned to study the city's water system and had maps drawn of each of the city's three main water supplies. The result is an illuminated work accompanied by 3 strips of parchment, each several metres long. As well as showing the course of the canals, these include faithful representations of the city's monuments and public buildings. The quality and historical interest of these parchments make them among the most important in Rouen's archives.
