Description
[VALDORY (Guillaume). Discours du siège de la ville de Rouen: Au mois de Novembre, mil cinq cens quatre vingts onze. Avec le pourtraict du Vieil & nouveau Fort. Rouen, Richard L'Allemant, sd [1592]. Small in-8, of [8]-149-[3] ff. Wood-engraved headbands, lettering and endpapers. Restored title leaf missing with small loss to wood and one letter filled in by hand. Light dampstaining. Worm damage on the last few pages affecting the text. Tear not missing on f. 149. Short margins with damage to running title. First edition of this account published only a fortnight after the events of the siege of Rouen, written by the captain of the town's burghers, who led the defence during the siege led by Henri IV in 1591, during the Eighth War of Religion, and who was subsequently promoted to lieutenant-general of the viscount of Rouen for his loyal services. Original pagination errors (jumps between ff. 36 and 39 and ff. 46 and 49). A rare work, especially when complete with the fine woodcut folding plate with printed caption: "Portraict du vieil et nouveau fort de Saincte Catherine". It is missing here. "The author of this work, which has become rare, did not name himself on the title, but signed the dedicatory epistle addressed to the poet Desportes" (Brunet). (Barbier, I, 1014; Hauser, IV, 3007; Frère, II, 586; Lormier, V, 4280; Brunet, V, 1033). Following: Discours véritable sur la mort, funérailles et enterrement de defun et messire André de Brancas, en son vivant chevalier Seigneur de Villars [...] Gouverneur [...] ès villes et baillages de Rouen [...] Rouen, Richard L'Allemant, 1595. 75-[4] pp. Woodcut portrait of Admiral de Villars. Extensive damage to title with loss of text filled in by hand, title leaf doubled and detached. More extensive staining on the last few leaves (with holes and loss of text on the very last leaf). Short margins. Very rare. Marbled basane, spine ribbed and decorated (18th century binding). Gnawing and spotting. Ex-libris JM.
