Description
[LA FRESNAYE (André de). On the Haras du Pin, or the former Normandy Stud. A project to conserve the fine breeds of horse in the Departments of Orne, Manche and Calvados, and to breed a new breed that may be superior. By a Calvados owner. Falaise, Brée frères, Paris, Batilliot le jeune, An XI (1803).
In-8 havana half calf, spine ribbed and decorated, title page (post. binding). A fine copy.
André de La Fresnaye, born in Falaise in 1756, died at the château de La Fresnaye near Falaise on 24 August 1824.
"A rather interesting little work for its description of livestock farming in Normandy after the destruction of the stud farms and the devastation caused by the requisitions. Note the passages in which the author asserts that racing will never take off in Normandy and that it should definitely be abandoned...". Mennessier de La Lance, II, 548 (Frère II, 132.)
Interesting provenance with the ex-libris stamp on the title of the library of Lt Colonel GERHARDT, Gustave-Adolphe (1824-?) who was chief squadron instructor at Saumur in 1869-1870, retired in 1874 and wrote many books (cf. Mennessier de La Lance I? 543-544). Ex-libris JM.
