Description
GAILLEMIN, Jan Louis. André Dubreuil – Poet of Iron. [21141] Norma Éditions, 2006. Large in/4 (30 x 24 cm) publisher’s hardback with illustrated dust jacket, nearly 300 colour illustrations, 112 pages, and 40 unnumbered leaves. Text in French and English. This book traces the career of André Dubreuil and presents his complete body of work from 1985 to 2006: nearly 400 enigmatic pieces of furniture and objects, including chairs, chests of drawers, mirrors, cabinets, clocks and lanterns. “Sleek and alluring, the Spine chair, which adorns the cover of this book, is one of the best-known objects in contemporary design. It can be found in museums and in all design encyclopaedias. Its creator, André Dubreuil, after a career as an antique dealer and decorative painter, was one of the driving forces behind the new wave of British design in the mid-1980s, alongside Mark Brazier-Jones and Tom Dixon. Having worked with reinforcing steel with the skill of a magician, Dubreuil turned his attention to traditional forms to breathe new life into them. A return to allusion, ornamentation and ‘craftsmanship’ that took place without a second thought: for him, invention is what matters above all else. The history of styles has never caught up with him, for he has no idea where his craft will lead him tomorrow – a craft that, through random experimentation, has yielded nearly 400 enigmatic pieces of furniture and objects from 1985 to the present day, chairs, chests of drawers, mirrors, cabinets, clocks and lanterns, in which dreams, invention and mystery take precedence over function.”
