Description
MAGNY, A. V. Reinforced Concrete Construction – Theory and Practice. [11556]
1914 Paris and Liège, Librairie Polytechnique Ch. Béranger, 1914. A substantial in/8 volume, in burgundy publisher’s percaline, gilt title, 428 illustrations in the text and 9 fold-out plates, 587 pages.
Owing to its strategic importance, its method of construction was a military secret kept confidential by the Cimmerians, the Phoenicians and the Egyptians. Enabling the construction of artificial harbours, fortresses, temples and commemorative monuments, it spread throughout the Greek colonies thanks to the conquests of Alexander the Great, then throughout the Roman Empire following its alliance with Neapolis, before falling into disuse upon the empire’s collapse. Rediscovered by the West only in the 19th century, notably thanks to Louis Vicat, cement concrete is currently the most widely used building material.
