Description
JEAN PETIT MATILE, Maurice. R. Th. Bosshard. [26331]
Editions Marendaz, Lutry, 1980. In/4 (25 x 19 cm), publisher’s cloth binding with colour-illustrated dust jacket, 107 pages. Illustrated with black-and-white plates in the text and colour plates, laminated.
In 1910, he travelled to Paris. In 1914, he married Ingeborg Schammer, with whom he had two children, Manon and André. His first major exhibition took place in 1916 in Lausanne at the gallery run by Paul Vallotton. From 1920 to 1924, Bosshard lived in Paris, where he became friends with Ossip Zadkine, Marc Chagall, André Derain, Jules Pascin, Gino Severini, Jean Lurçat and his compatriots, the writers Cingria and Blaise Cendrars. The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris acquired several of his paintings; the artist exhibited alongside Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso, amongst others. His numerous travels, notably to Greece, Algeria and Italy, provided him with new subjects. In the 1930s, two major public commissions gave him the opportunity to work on large-scale pieces and to discover the technique of mosaic. In 1949, his first retrospective took place in Vevey, followed by one in Geneva in 1950. He died in 1960. Following his early works of an expressionist nature, such as *La ville folle* (1910), Bosshard was influenced, from the end of the First World War onwards, by Cubist experiments, particularly in his mountain landscapes; subsequently, nudes came to dominate his output.
