Ferdinand Hodler: Swiss painter, 1853–1918. Hodler is regarded as the Swiss painter who had the greatest influence on the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1872, having completed his apprenticeship as a painter and decorator, he settled in the city of Geneva, where he lived until his death. His early paintings were directly influenced by the Swiss Realism of artists such as Albert Anker, Rudolf Koller and Alexandre Calame, but a trip to Spain in 1878 opened up new aesthetic horizons for him. From then on, he deliberately subjected his subjects to his desire for abstraction and composition, replacing his earthy tones with a light, impressionistic colour scheme, predominantly light grey. However, it was only when he turned to Symbolism that his work finally gained recognition.
