Fresh copy in excellent condition. Guillaume Corneille van Beverloo was born in 1922 to Dutch parents in Liège (BE), where he spent many years of his childhood. In 1943, after a brief spell at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Arts, where he found the teaching too academic, he abandoned the traditional curriculum to experiment and express himself freely. Unfortunately, war broke out and cast its dark shadow over the world. Against all odds and despite the hell of war, Corneille continued to paint. Upon liberation, he decided to put this terrible period behind him and embraced freedom with open arms. In 1947, he was invited to exhibit his paintings in Budapest. There he discovered the works of P. Klee and met J. Doucet. On his return to the Netherlands, in 1948 he founded, together with K. Appel and Constant, the Experimentele Groep Amsterdam and Reflex. On 8 November of the same year, in opposition to A. Breton’s overly theoretical Surrealism, Corneille, together with his two Dutch companions, the Belgian artists C. Dotremont and J. Noiret, and the Danish artist A. Jorn, founded the COBRA group in Paris
