Philippe Artias, whose real name was Jean Henri Saby-Viricel, was born on 3 September 1912 in Feurs, France. In 1929, he was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne. He designed fabrics for haute couture. In 1938, he settled in Retournac as a grocer, tobacconist and painter, heavily influenced by André Lhote, with whom he maintained an extensive correspondence. However, he achieved no success as a painter. He joined the Resistance in February 1942. Following the Liberation, he was appointed Prefect of Corrèze… for forty-eight hours! In 1947, he met Édouard Pignon and worked with him in his ceramics studio in Vallauris. In 1953, he met Picasso, with whom he became friends. That same year, he moved to Clermont-Ferrand. From 1963 onwards, he lived in Saint-Étienne, where he was appointed director of the visual arts at the Maison de la Culture. “A life divided between France and Italy has enabled Philippe Artias to interweave innovative, colourful visual experiments with political themes, in which an immense sensuality is always evident.” His work is represented in more than a dozen museums around the world.
