Description
Jean-Pauil LEMONDE. The Shadow of the Pillar and the Square of the Earth. Or How to Interpret Romanesque and Gothic Churches. [34950] Dervy 1997, in/8 paperback, 425 pages. Black-and-white illustrations. “For each of us, our approach to religious buildings from the medieval period generally follows specific paths that depend on the interest we take in them. Churches and cathedrals form part of the heritage left to us by our ancestors. They have imbued these structures not only with their knowledge and techniques but also with their beliefs, and it would be detrimental to our own culture not to attempt to uncover what these buildings can reveal to us about the culture that gave rise to them. The approach, set out in *L’Ombre du Poteau et le Carré de la Terre*, follows directly the process of the experimental method successfully used in physics or medicine, for example. It offers a new investigative tool to all those interested in medieval art, whether in the fields of architecture and archaeology, or in the symbolic or historical spheres. A combination of natural curiosity, a keen interest in art and drawing, and a scientific background – fostered by his family origins in southern Burgundy, a region rich in Romanesque churches – led the author to take an interest in sacred architecture in 1989."
