François Vernay, Lyon 1821–1896, whose real name was Francis Miel, was a landscape painter from Lyon. His career began upon graduating from the floral painting class at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon in 1844. Vernay became a designer of floral patterns for the silk industry in Lyon. It was undoubtedly his meeting with François-Auguste Ravier in 1850 that profoundly shaped the direction of his art. He soon began to alternate between painting flowers and landscapes. He abandoned his sombre palette and colour began to feature in his paintings. From 1865 onwards, he turned to still lifes featuring flowers and fruit. His drawings foreshadowed the boldness that would later characterise Expressionism and Fauvism.
