“Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida de Niemeyer Soares (born 15 December 1907 in Rio de Janeiro, where he died on 5 December 2012) was a Brazilian architect and designer. He is one of Brazil’s most famous architects. His work, which is closely associated with the International Style movement, occupies a major place in the history of modern architecture. He is best known for the construction of Brasília in Brazil, in collaboration with the urban planner Lucio Costa, which was inaugurated in 1960. Exiled to Europe in the mid-1960s, his notable projects included the headquarters of the French Communist Party, the former headquarters of the newspaper *L’Humanité*, the Bobigny Labour Exchange and the Maison de la Culture in Le Havre. He was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1988 and was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour on 12 December 2007, three days before his 100th birthday."
