Born on 26 January 1935 in Lisbon, she left Portugal and Salazar’s dictatorship to study in London, where she has lived for fifty years, whilst frequently visiting Portugal. A remarkable draughtswoman and colourist, her figurative and expressionist work is informed by personal experiences. The artist draws inspiration from fairy tales and also explores the female condition in unsettling scenes that reflect her fantasies and rebellious spirit. The town of Cascais decided to dedicate a museum to her, which opened in 2009 and houses a collection of several hundred drawings, engravings and paintings by Paula Rego, as well as paintings by her husband, Victor Willing.
