Description
DAUMIER, Honoré. The One Hundred and One Robert Macaire. [14123]
Editions Dioscor, 1984. Loose sheets in a cardboard folder and an ecru cloth slipcase, title in black on the top cover, 101 plates. One of 1,000 numbered copies. A reprint of a work that marked the dawn of social caricature. This genre took on a new, more specifically political, character, serving as a general satire of the citizenry.
Honoré Daumier (1808–1879), a French engraver, caricaturist, painter and sculptor, whose numerous works commented on social and political life in 19th-century France. A prolific artist, creator of over 4,000 lithographs, he is best known for his caricatures of politicians and his satires on the behaviour of his compatriots. *La Caricature* ceased publication, but Philipon offered Daumier a new platform by founding *Le Charivari*, a newspaper that played an important role in the political life of the time and was specifically directed against Louis-Philippe. For *Le Charivari*, Daumier produced social caricatures in which he ridiculed bourgeois society, personified by the figure of Robert Macaire, the hero of a popular melodrama. In another series, *L’histoire ancienne*, he took aim at the pseudo-classicism prevalent in art during that period. He also documented certain tragic events and striking scenes unfolding in Paris.
