Marie Joséphine de Suin, known in society as Countess Diane de Beausacq, and by her pen names Countess Diane and Emmeline Raymond (1829–1899). Diane de Beausacq held a salon in Paris where she entertained, amongst others, Jane Dieulafoy, Pierre Loti, Henri Martin, Sully Prudhomme, Jean Aicard and José-Maria de Heredia... From 1860 to 1902, she founded and edited the magazine *La Mode Illustrée* under the name Emmeline Raymond. Well versed in the customs of high society, she emphasised the importance of mutual respect between masters and servants with a beautiful maxim: “Respect cannot be demanded; it is independent, like all feelings: it is inspired, not imposed.”
