[Africa] SENEGAL. 2 important texts in one volume in-8, full contemporary fawn basane, smooth spine decorated. One spine cracked, the other rubbed, cap missing, rubbing and wear to binding. 1/ LA JAILLE (André-Ch., Marquis de) - LABARTHE (Pierre). Voyage au Sénégal pendant les années 1784 et 1785 avec des notes sur cette partie de l'Afrique jusqu'en l'an X (1801 et 1802) par P. Labarthe. Paris, Dentu, an X - 1802. XII, 262 pp. First edition illustrated with a very large folding map drawn by Lapie and engraved by P.F. Tardieu. Lajaille (1749-1815) took part in La Pérouse's expeditions to Hudson Bay, made two voyages to Senegal, explored Cap Blanc in Sierra Leone with Sylvain Meinrad de Golberry and, in 1784-1785, acquired Kunta Kinteh Island (then called Gambia, then James) for the French government. During the Revolution, he emigrated to England, became a Chouan, entered Spanish service as a captain and served in Saint-Domingue, becoming a merchant in Havana and then a planter in Honduras. He died during a stopover in Ireland. Pierre Labarthe (1760-1824) was appointed head of the office for the Eastern Colonies and the African coast in 1794 and held this position until 1808. 2/ PELLETAN (Jean-Gabriel). Mémoire sur la colonie française du Sénégal, avec quelques considérations historiques et politiques sur la traite des Nègres, sur leur caractère, et les moyens de faire servir la suppression de cette traite à l'accroissement et à la prospérité de cette Colonie. Paris, Veuve Panckoucke, An IX [1800 - 1801] (2) ff., XVI, 118 pp. Very rare first edition, dedicated to Bonaparte, First Consul, decorated with an engraved fold-out map of the west coast of Africa, between Cape Blanc and Cape Tagrin. The author, appointed administrator and general manager of the Compagnie du Sénégal in 1787, describes the state of this colony and proposes its development for the good of the Republic.
