First edition illustrated with a folding map at the head of volume I. The Académie des inscriptions entrusted the French missionary and archaeologist E. Boré (1809-1878) a mission to Persia. He carried out excavations in the country and studied its monuments. He also took advantage of his stay to open a Catholic school in Shah Abbas and set up charitable works. He then taught at the Lazarist College in Constantinople, travelled to Syria and Palestine and returned to France in 1866, where he became superior of the Lazarist order until his death.
