First edition illustrated with the portrait of the author on the frontispiece of volume I. Without the Atlas. René Caillé (1799-1838) set sail for Senegal in 1816. In order to win the prize offered by the Société de Géographie for the first European to enter Timbuktu, he decided to learn Arabic for a year and to initiate himself into Islam in order to perfect his deception: passing himself off as an Egyptian kidnapped as a child by Napoleon's army and wanting to rejoin his family. He was the first Christian to enter the city, in April 1828, and to leave alive, but he returned ill, wrote his book and died prematurely.
