NIEBUHR (Carsten), Description de l'Arabie faite sur des observations propres et des avis recueillis dans les lieux mêmes, Amsterdam, S.J. Baalde, & Utrecht, J. van Schoonhoven, 1774. One volume in-4, fawn half calf from the first half of the 19th century, spine ribbed and decorated. XLII, 372 pp, (7) ff (table and errata). Boards slightly rubbed else a fine copy.
Second edition of the French translation, given by Ferdinand-Louis Mourier, illustrated with a title vignette, and 24 plates (out of 25) representing costumes, inscriptions, extracts from the Koran (fold-outs), coins, tools, maps (fold-outs), mosques, views and costumes and 1 genealogical table.
As an astronomer and cartographer, Niebuhr (1733-1815) was sent in 1761 by the King of Denmark to "Arabia Felix" but returned 6 years later as the only survivor of the mission. Despite losing most of the collections he had sent back to Denmark, he wrote an impartial account of his voyage and self-published some of his works.
