EMERGENCY CURRENCY circa 1850 – RARE COIN-LIKE TOKEN from the CHÂTEAU de MORMÈS. (32) – Octagonal brass token, 25.5 – Circular inscription ‘CHÂTEAU DE MORMES’; in the centre, between two palm fronds of vine leaves and bunches of grapes, ‘1 JOURNEE’ (*). A rose in the exergue. - Reverse: a sheaf of wheat in the centre of a circle of dots; surrounding legend “DIEU PROTEGE NOS RECOLTES” – 7.72 grams – TTB ( * ) A token used to record the wages of farm labourers and day labourers working on the estate. These tokens were subsequently exchanged for cash when handed over to the estate’s accountant or steward.
