HOME-BASED COIN MANUFACTURING – MAZOYER & BALME in SAUMUR ( * ). MANUFACTURER OF RELIGIOUS JEWELLERY, CRUCIFIXES AND ROSARIES 14 Quai de Limoges – 30 mm round, single-sided token in silver-plated copper, with the number ‘2 and a quarter’ in the centre. A token used to record piecework carried out at home, most likely the stringing of rosary beads – tokens issued upon delivery of the completed work to the company, which the recipient would then exchange for cash with the in-house accountant – A very rare memento of the world of work, particularly that of women and children, from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and of a major company that left its mark on its era and its city. RARE TOKEN. ( * ) – Joseph Mazoyer founded the company in 1833. In 1910, Joseph Balme (1850–1923) took over the management and mechanised the business by fitting it with a powerful steam engine. Balme either turned the beads for its rosaries in-house or purchased them ready-made in Auvergne, particularly in Olliergues, in the Ambert region, a place specialising in this production. It also struck medals and would later become best known for this production (under the name Pichard-Balme) – military medals and insignia.
