CUBA “REPUBLICA de CUBA” – BLACK FELT BICORNE HAT FOR FULL DRESS UNIFORM OF A CIVIL SERVANT, circa 1880–1900 – ostrich feathers around the top and running the entire length. In the centre, a large tricolour cockade: a large red circle in the middle, surrounded by white and blue bands. Across the top, a flat velvet band embroidered in gold thread with a flower stem framed on either side. At the base of the stem is a domed, gilded metal uniform button bearing the coat of arms of the Cuban Republic (*). The interior is cream leather, with an ivory silk lining featuring a very attractive embossed coat of arms reading ‘AU PAVILLON DE ROHAN P. PASQUIER, successor to Augustin Donny, 77 Rue Saint-Honoré, Paris’ – beneath which are the initials ‘P. E. ". Length 44.5 cm – width 17 cm – height (without feathers) 13.5 cm. In very good condition in its original cardboard shipping box, retaining its shape and the hatter’s markings. ( * ) Former coat of arms of Cuba, created in 1849, featuring, at the top, a sea with two land masses at its ends and a key in the centre; in the background, the rising sun; on the left, the Cuban flag; on the right, a palm tree; the whole surmounted by a Phrygian cap.
