FRANCE – STUDENT’S BICORNE FROM THE ÉCOLE POLYTECHNIQUE, Second Empire, circa 1860 – Black felt and black silk, with a black braid around the rim embroidered with oak leaves. On the front, a tricolour cockade with double 12 mm GILDED BRASS braiding, held in place by a gilded metal uniform button marked ‘École Impériale Polytechnique’; the centre features a breastplate with a helmet resting on crossed cannons and a naval anchor. Interior in leather and black silk with the student’s number and the manufacturer’s mark featuring a crowned motif: “Honni soit qui mal y pense LEJEUNE de PARIS, 5 rue du Marché St Honoré, Supplier to the State”.
