FRANCE – POLICE – CONTRACT STAFF of the PARISIAN POLICE. – RARE HEADGEAR worn by Parisian police auxiliaries responsible for parking enforcement, commonly known as ‘PERVENCHES’ ( * ) due to the colour of their uniform: a round cap edged with matching felt braid, adorned with four topstitches, with a loop at the back, and featuring a blue-white-red embroidered badge at the front depicting the coat of arms of Paris surmounted by the inverted letters P P. The brim is turned up at the back and sides. The interior features blue edging and a khaki felt lining. – height 12.5 cm – length 26 cm – width 24 cm.
( * ) an art nouveau... THE PARKING METER first appeared in Paris in October 1971. As the Paris Police did not wish to monitor these, a special all-female brigade was created. First came the ‘aubergines’, dressed in red, then the ‘Pervenches’, dressed in blue... The lowest rank in the police force. The trade unions fought to have these auxiliary officers abolished and integrated into the Municipal Police. In fact, these ‘Pervenches’ lasted only a very short time.
These short-lived ‘Pervenches’ remain in the collective memory thanks to Danièle Evenou, an actress who played one of them in a famous 1980s television series. As the actress playing a ‘Pervenche’, her dream in the role was, in fact, to join the police’s investigative services.
