IMPERIAL JAPAN – FORMAL TWO-CORNERED HAT, probably belonging to the DIPLOMATIC CORPS, circa 1880–1900 - Black velvet with ostrich feathers around the rim and running the full length of the top - In the centre, a large 9 cm white cockade with a red ‘comma’ across it, symbolising the rising sun. Diagonally across runs a 48 mm flat velvet braid with rich embroidery framed in gold thread depicting flowers and leaves. At the base is a gold-plated metal uniform button decorated with a lotus flower. Cream-coloured leather lining, ivory silk lining, bearing the mark of the hatmaker Jules MARIA, 14 Rue du 4 Septembre, Paris – initials of the hat’s owner: ‘C.R.’. Length: 45.5 cm – width: 16 cm – height (excluding the feathers): 10 cm. The hat is presented in its custom-shaped wooden carrying case.
