BRAZILIAN EMPIRE – DIPLOMATIC CORPS FULL-DRESS BICORNE HAT, circa 1880 / 1900 – ostrich feathers around the top and running the full length. In the centre, a five-pointed star-shaped cockade made of green beads edged with silver thread; across the top, a flat velvet braid embroidered with a palm frond in gold canette thread. At the base of the stems is a domed gilded button depicting the Great Seal of Brazil (*). – Interior in cream leather, lining in ivory silk, with a very attractive embossed coat of arms of FOIGNET, 76 Rue Nationale, Lille. Length: 42 cm – width: 14 cm – height (excluding feathers): 13 cm. In very good condition, in its custom-shaped wooden transport case. ( * ) Great Seal of Brazil: a crowned globe on a shield flanked by two palm fronds. Used by Pierre II, the constitutional emperor; struck in 1848 for the Second Republic; a symbol of Brazil’s authority.
