1848 MEDAL, issued to commemorate the ‘FEBRUARY REVOLUTION’. (**) “French Republic: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” – Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap, in profile facing left – reverse: “BY SMASHING THE CROWN, THE PEOPLE BROKE THEIR CHAINS”, a captive in full face view, in chains, breaking his chains; with the exergue “23–24 February 1848”. ( * ) Brass, 31 mm, with bail and ring. A previous owner added a tricolour ribbon out of patriotism, but this ribbon is not original. In 1848, the medal was sold without a ribbon. ( * ) Medal engraved in Lyon by Marius PENIN on behalf of the medal manufacturer MARGERIE. Issued in April 1848 to commemorate the February Days. ( ** ) The French Revolution of 1848, known as the ‘February Revolution’. It took place in Paris from 22 to 25 February 1848. The insurgents, comprising liberals from amongst the people of Paris, seized control of the capital and forced King Louis Philippe to abdicate. The Second Republic was proclaimed by Alphonse de Lamartine.
