PHOTOGRAPH, PORTRAIT OF MARIA PIA, PRINCESS OF SAVOY, QUEEN OF PORTUGAL.
Born in Turin in 1847, daughter of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, married to King Louis I of Portugal in 1862 – Photograph from 1864 signed by the Bisson brothers ( * ) - Portrait of her seated in front of a book, on paper, mounted on card in visiting-card format (10 × 5.8 cm).
( * ) Louis Auguste BISSON, known as ‘Bisson the Elder’ (1814–1876), and Auguste Rosalie Bisson, known as ‘Bisson the Younger’ (1826–1900), were two pioneering innovators in French photography. Based in Paris at 8 Rue Garancière, their studio employed up to 30 staff. They gained international renown, and nearly a third of their photographs featured subjects outside France. Commissioned by Napoleon III, they produced the first photographs of mountaineering by climbing Mont Blanc on two occasions.
