PHOTOGRAPHER PIERRE PETIT ( * ) PARIS - BESANÇON - THIRTY-TWO (32) photographs from various periods, circa 1860–1900 – Visiting-card-sized photographs (approx. 10.5 x 6 cm), on paper, mounted on card, all signed. Men and women of the world, children, young girls, students, a newlywed couple, all posing full-length. ( * ) PIERRE LANITH-PETIT, born on 15 August 1831 in AUPS (Var) and died on 16 February 1909 in Paris. Known as ‘the long-haired collodion man’, inventor of the visiting-card-sized photograph. After learning photography from Eugène DISDERI, he set up his studios in Paris in 1858 at 31 Place Cadet. “Photographer to the French episcopate, the imperial lycées and schools of France, the Faculty of Medicine and the Society of Men of Letters, the King of Prussia, and the Grand Duke of Baden ” – the Imperial Commission appointed him official photographer for the 1867 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was commissioned by the state to document the construction of the Statue of Liberty in Auguste Bartholdi’s Paris workshop prior to its shipment to New York. His sons continued to run his shops.
