Description
ALGERIA – EIGHT PHOTOGRAPHS circa 1860 / 1880 – ‘Algerian photography’, ‘PEINTRE PHOTOGRAPHE GEIGER’, famous ‘photographer-publishers’ (*).
Eight bromide prints mounted on card, visiting-card size (approx. 10.5 x 6 cm), depicting scenes and local types, as well as portraits of Algerian Jews, both men and women.
( * ) In 1852, Julie GEIGER, originally from La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, opened a photographic studio in Algiers, on Passage Malakoff.
- In 1855, the studio flourished when she went into partnership with J. Baptiste AMARY.
- Twenty years later, her son Jean GEISER took over the business at 7 Bab-Azzoum.
A witness to his time, for half a century he photographed the whole of Algeria from every angle and on every subject, particularly people (“scenes and types”, monuments, everyday life).
