PARIS – “1897 EXHIBITION” ( * ) - EXHIBITOR’S ID CARD in the name of THE PAINTER JULES ADLER (**) numbered 756 – Business card size, featuring a head-and-shoulders photograph facing forwards, bromide mounted on card, 10.5 x 6.5 cm - On both the front and back, folded in half, the exhibitor’s card bears the letterhead of the Société des Artistes Français, with a dry stamp depicting ‘a standing artist painting a model’. A VERY RARE INSTANCE of the use of a visiting card photograph as an OFFICIAL PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY CARD. ( * ) “Salon de Paris” – An art exhibition held annually in early February, presenting, following selection by a jury, paintings, sculptures, architectural works, engravings and photographs by living artists. Since 1881, the exhibition has been organised by the “Société des artistes français”, recognised as a public utility by a decree of 11 May 1883. The society, founded in 1880, succeeded the Académie des Beaux-Arts, itself the successor to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture established during the reign of Louis XIV. It has played a major role in the promotion of art in France and the recognition of artists. It is the first annual event on the French art scene. ( ** ) JULES ADLER: painter, born on 8 July 1865 in Luxeuil-les-Bains, died on 11 June 1952 in Nogent-sur-Marne. “Painter of the humble”, associated with the Naturalist movement. A multiple medallist at the Salon, his favourite subject was the working class (“Joies populaires” – gold medal; “La grève – Le Creusot” – 1900 Salon) - From 1914 to 1918, he set up a canteen on Place Pigalle to help artists impoverished by the war, which served several thousand meals.
