LIEBERT of Paris; photograph taken to illustrate an article on Hugo d’Alesi published in the newspaper *La France Illustrée*, issue of 28 January 1899. ON THE BACK OF THE PHOTOGRAPH: an advertisement for Liebert’s “American Photography” at 6 Rue de Londre, and a signed autograph reading “With warmest regards, Hugo d’Alesi”. ( * ) Frédéric ALEXIANU, known as HUGO D’ALESI – Painter and immensely talented poster artist of the late 19th century. Naturalised French citizen. Born on 10 February 1849 in Hermannstadt, Grand Principality of Transylvania, then part of Austria – Died in Paris on 11 November 1906. He produced numerous posters and engravings of French cities, in particular many tourist promotional posters for the early railway companies, such as Paris-Orléans, P.L.M. and the Chemins de fer de l’Ouest, as well as illustrations for the 1889 World’s Fair, etc.
