LILLE / Emile Louis SALOME ( * ) – PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH, business-card size… USED AS A DEATH NOTICE – Portrait of the painter, full-face bust, bromide mounted on card, 10.4 x 6.3 cm, with a purple border. On the reverse: ‘SOUVENIR’, illustrated with a palette and paintbrushes, and the text: ‘Emile Louis Salomé, painter, Member of the Lille Society of Sciences and Arts / Trustee of the art museums and Wicar / Former administrator of the academic schools of Lille / died on 24 August 1881 at the Château de Coisne in Salomé in his 48th year – His art, his friends; to love – to be loved / FROM HIS FAMILY TO HIS FRIENDS”. (document status: SUP) ( * ) SALOME: born and died in LILLE, 17 December 1833 / 24 August 1881. A pupil of his father, a lithographer, he entered the Lille Academy Schools around 1845. Awarded a scholarship by the City of Paris in 1862, he spent four years in Rome at the Wicar studio alongside his fellow painter Carolus Duran. In Lille, he gained considerable regional renown. He exhibited at the Paris Salon until his death. His works are held in numerous museums in France and Switzerland.
