COLMAR in ALSACE – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1880 / 1900, visiting-card size, black bromide mounted on card, 10.5 x 6.5 cm - Artistic portrait signed by the SEVERIN SCHOY studio ( * ), “COLMAR i / els Rufacherstr; 48” (now Avenue de la République), a young girl in traditional dress with a large headdress featuring large ‘bow-tie’ knots, the two ‘curls’ framing a beautiful face; a symbol, after 1870, of lost Alsace. ( * ) Séverin SCHOY – on the back of the photograph, his framed advertisement states: “Photographer to His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, winner of numerous prizes in Japan and abroad. Acknowledgements to His Majesty King Leopold of Belgium, His Serene Highness the Prince of Solms-Braunfels, and Her Serene Highness Princess Louise of Solms-Braunfels”. Little is known about this photographer, who is known for his fine portraits and who produced numerous postcards of Alsace. Originally from Bisingen in Baden-Württemberg, he was born in 1855. He left Alsace, probably after the German defeat in 1919, though the exact date is unknown, and is thought to have died around 1960.
