( * ) ABD EL KADER, Emir, Sultan and theologian, born on 6 September 1808 in El Guetna, died in Damascus on 26 May 1883 – An Algerian military and religious leader who, from 1831 to 1847, fought against the French conquest of Algeria. He successfully resisted one of the most powerful armies in Europe. After his surrender in 1847, he was held captive in France for almost five years, spending most of that time at the Château d’Amboise, before being released by Louis Napoléon Bonaparte.
