Description
ALGERIA – TEN PHOTOGRAPHS SIGNED “C. PORTIER” ( * ) – circa 1870, visiting-card-sized photographs (approximately 10.5 x 6.5 cm), albumin bromide prints mounted on card. Ten prints, including one coloured with watercolour, from the series “Picturesque Algeria”, depicting local men, women and small trades. ( * ) Claude Joseph PORTIER, known as Claudius: born on 24 May 1841 in Paris, died in Algiers on 9 May 1910. Photographer active in Algeria from 1863 to 1882. A student at the ENSAM in Aix-en-Provence (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts & Métiers) and a pupil of the painter and photographer Auguste Belloc, before setting up his studio at 9 Rue Napoléon in Algiers. He was one of the first professional photographers to set up in Algeria. He produced a series of portraits, scenes and character studies, which were published as photographs in various formats and as early postcards. In 1867, he took part in the Paris World’s Fair. Along with Jean GEISER, he was one of the most talented photographers in Algiers and won a gold medal for his photographs. He sold his studio in 1883 to the photographer Alexandre LEROUX.
