LEON GAMBETTA ( * ) – THREE PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1860–1880, visiting-card size (approx. 10.5 x 6 cm), albumin bromide prints mounted on card. - THREE PORTRAITS: one three-quarter-length portrait by Pierre PETIT at 31 Place Cadet, Paris; another bust in profile by Etienne CARJAT at 10 Rue Notre Dame de Lorette, Paris; the third, a standing figure in profile by G.M. LEGE, former partner and successor to CARJAT. ( * ) GAMBETTA, born on 2 August 1838 in CAHORS, died on 31 December 1882 in Sèvres. A leading politician of the Third Republic: President of the Council, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Minister of National Defence following the defeat at Sedan, and elected as a deputy on several occasions. A lawyer by training, he was a leading opponent of Napoleon III and the Second Empire, campaigning for the separation of church and state, for income tax, and for the abolition of the standing armies… In 1870, he proclaimed the restoration of the Republic. He left the capital by hot-air balloon for Tours to organise the resistance in the provinces. Upon his death, the government decreed a state funeral; for the first time in the history of the Republic, 100,000 people lined the route. His father requested that he be buried in Nice, alongside Gambetta’s mother, in the Château cemetery. A special train was chartered to transport his remains to the family vault. On 11 November 1920, his heart was transferred to the Panthéon.
