CAIRO, Egypt – PHOTOGRAPHER HIPPOLYTE DELIE ( * ) “THREE MUSLIMS IN PRAYER” – RARE photograph, circa 1869 / 1870, visiting-card size, 10.5 x 6.3 cm, landscape orientation, albumen bromide mounted on card, showing a close-up frontal view of three local Egyptians in various positions of Muslim prayer. On the back of the photographic card: “IN THE ESBEKIEH GARDEN” H. Délié & E. Béchard, Cairo, Egypt”. ( * ) DELIE – A pioneer of photography, born in Marcenay (21) on 25 May 1841 and died in Tarbes on 11 February 1899. An Orientalist photographer active in Egypt from 1869, in partnership with Émile Béchard. He photographed city streets and their inhabitants, ancient monuments, and produced studio portraits. The studio marketed his “photocards” as souvenirs to early tourists. In 1878, Délié left Egypt; Béchard remained in Cairo and took over the business of the photographer DISDERI in Paris. Two years later, he left Paris and took over the SERENI studio in Tarbes.
