ALGIERS – ALGERIA – PHOTOGRAPHER ALEXANDRE LEROUX ( * ) –
THREE PHOTOGRAPHS, in visiting-card format (approx. 10.5 x 6.4 mm), bromide prints mounted on card:
- TWO STUDIO PORTRAITS, two young women in head-and-shoulders shots facing forwards, signed ‘A.L.’ on the reverse. On the back of the card is an advertisement reading ‘A. LEROUX, painter, “member and photographer of the Algiers Society of Fine Arts”, 9 Rue de la Lyre’. - circa 1870–75.
- ‘scene & type’ portrait of a street musician, a fine close-up of the man seated facing the viewer.
On the reverse: “A. LEROUX & Co., Place Bresson, Maison Limozin near the theatre – Shop selling prints and views at 14 Rue Bab Azoun”. Photograph circa 1860–70, likely a late reprint from the negatives based on the original glass plate, circa 1912–20.
( * ) - LEROUX - Born in Béziers in 1836, he took numerous photographs in Algeria, including scenes of the conquest whilst accompanying the French army. He succeeded Claude Joseph Portier by purchasing his studio in 1876. He subsequently moved to 14 Rue Bab Azoun and opened a branch on Place Bresson. He died in 1912 in Algiers. His sons continued to work from his glass plates, reprinting his original photographs.
