MARTINIQUE, a French colony – TWO PIONEERING PHOTOGRAPHS by Hippolyte Antoine HARTMANN ( * ) - Circa 1860 / 1870, two portraits of ‘békés’, white Creoles, a young boy and a young girl, standing facing the camera. Two albumin bromide prints mounted on visiting-card-sized cardboard (10 x 6.3 cm). The reverse is illustrated, beneath the inscription ‘photographie d’outre-mer’, with the emblem of Emperor Napoleon III (the imperial eagle in the centre of the crowned imperial mantle, resting on a crossed hand of justice and sceptre). Inscription: HARTMANN St Pierre, Martinique. ( * ) HARTMANN: photographer, publisher, printer, bookseller. In addition to his studio photographs, he published beautiful landscape photographs for travellers, images often reproduced in albums about Martinique. It is known that Hartmann was born in 1818; the date of his death is unknown.
