JERUSALEM / PALESTINE – GARABED KRIKORIAN, PHOTOGRAPHER (*). A full-length, frontal portrait of a Bedouin, posing in traditional dress with a long rifle. Circa 1890 / 1900, bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size, 10.7 x 6.5 cm – Illustrated signature of the photographer on the reverse. ( * ) KRIKORIAN: an Armenian photographer renowned for his pioneering work in photography in Jerusalem. One of the first and most famous professional photographers in the region, who played an important role in documenting the people, landscapes and historic sites of Palestine during the Ottoman and British Mandate periods. Born in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) in 1847. He arrived in Jerusalem in 1859 to attend the Armenian school. In 1885, he established the first photographic studio in Jerusalem, on Jaffa Street in the historic centre. He specialised in portrait photography in the Oriental style, which was much appreciated by locals and tourists alike, who were drawn to the aesthetic quality of his work.
