DIJON / POLITICS - Pierre Joseph MAGNIN ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, a frontal bust portrait, circa 1870 - Albumin bromide portrait in visiting-card format, 10.5 x 6.4 cm. Work by CH. REUTLINGER, 1st prize at the 1867 World’s Fair, 21 Boulevard Montmartre. ( * ) MAGNIN, a distinguished career – Born on 1 January 1824 in Dijon, died on 22 November 1910 in Paris. Ironmaster and politician. President of the Dijon Chamber of Commerce, General Councillor for the Côte-d’Or in 1865, Member of Parliament for the Côte-d’Or from 1863 to 1876. A member of the Government of National Defence, he became Minister for Agriculture and Trade, responsible for Paris’s food supplies. On 16 December 1875, the National Assembly elected him a life senator. Minister of Finance from 1879 to 1881. Appointed Governor of the Bank of France in 1881. Vice-President of the Senate in 1884. – In the family townhouse, his children Jeanne and Maurice built up a collection of 2,000 works of art, which they bequeathed to the State in 1938. It became the MAGNIN Museum in Dijon.
