LORIENT / POLITICS – JULES SIMON ( * ) – TWO PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1860–1870. One full-length front view by Pierre Petit, 31 Place Cadet, Paris, and one by CH. REUTLINGER, 21 Boulevard Montmartre, a three-quarter-length bust facing the viewer. Two albumin bromide portraits, visiting-card size, mounted on card, approximately 10.5 x 6.4 mm. ( * ) Jules François Simon (SWITZERLAND), known as Jules SIMON, philosopher and statesman. Born on 27 December 1814 in Lorient, died on 8 June 1896 in Paris. He studied at the secondary schools in Lorient and Vannes (now the Jeles Simin secondary school), entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1833 and became a professor of philosophy (1836) in Caen, then in Versailles (1837), before taking up his chair at the Sorbonne, publishing studies on university affairs and academic freedom. He was “a true intellectual guide for the bourgeois and petty-bourgeois masses of the late 19th century” (Marc Angenot). An opponent of the Second Empire, he was dismissed from his post and published numerous works—which were very popular in his day—on labour issues. A distinguished political career: President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of the Interior (1876–77), life senator (1875–1896), Minister for Education, Religious Affairs and Fine Arts (1870–71), Member of Parliament for the Marne (1871–75), for the Gironde (1869–70) and for the Côtes-du-Nord (1848–49)
