AUTUN / POLITICS – GENERAL CHANGARNIER (*), circa 1860–1870. Two different portraits, full-length and head-and-shoulders facing the viewer, in civilian attire, by BRAUN & Cie and Pierre PETIT & TRINQUART in Paris. – Albumin bromide prints in visiting-card format (approx. 10.5 x 6.2) mounted on card. ( * ) Nicolas CHANGARNIER, nicknamed ‘General Bergamote’, born in AUTUN on 26 April 1793, died in Versailles on 14 February 1877. After graduating from Saint-Cyr, he entered service on 10 January 1815 and served until 1870. He distinguished himself particularly during the Spanish expedition and the conquest of Algeria. A distinguished career: Acting Governor-General of Algeria from 27 September 1847 to 24 February 1848 – Governor-General of Algeria from 29 April 1848 to 9 September 1848 - Member of the Constituent National Assembly from 4 June 1848 to 26 May 1849 – Member of Parliament for the Somme from 1849–51 and 1871–76 - Senator for life following the election of 10 December 1875 – a loyalist, banished from France by the Second Empire, took refuge in Belgium until the General Amnesty Act.
