QUINTIN (22) – POLITICS – GLAIS de BIZOIN ( * ) – TWO PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1860, full-face and profile portraits, by FRANCK and Pierre PETIT of Paris. Albumin bromides, visiting-card size (approx. 10.5 x 6.2), mounted on card. ( * ) Alexandre Olivier GLAIS-BIZOIN: born on 11 March 1800 in Quintin, died on 6 November 1877 in Saint-Brieuc. Politician, trained as a lawyer. - He campaigned in Parliament to demand a reduction in the salt tax and the distance-based postage rates, and the abolition of the tax stamp on newspapers. Within the postal system, he proposed the adoption of a single postal rate in 1839 and 1847; this was finally adopted on 1 January 1849 with the introduction of the postage stamp. A distinguished career: Minister without portfolio in the Government of National Defence, 1870–1871 – elected eight times as MP for the Côtes du Nord (now the Côtes d’Armor) between 1831 and 1870 - Member of the General Council for the Côtes du Nord in 1839–1848 and 1867–1871. In 1868, he founded the newspaper *La Tribune* and, as an aside, in 1870 he hired Émile Zola as his secretary.
