NÎMES / INDRE-ET-LOIRE - POLITICS - ADOLPHE CREMIEUX ( * ) - circa 1860, TWO PHOTOGRAPHS - Two three-quarter profile portraits, one seated, the other a head-and-shoulders shot. Works by Pierre PETIT and GASTON MATHIEU & Co. of Paris – Visiting-card size, approx. 10.5 x 6.4 cm, albumin bromides mounted on card. ( * ) Isaac Jacob Adolphe CREMIEUX: born on 30 April 1796 in Nîmes, died in Paris on 10 February 1880. Lawyer and politician. During the reign of Louis-Philippe, he established himself as a leading barrister serving the Jewish community. A dignitary of Freemasonry, he was one of the founders of the ‘Alliance Israélite Universelle’. He served as a Member of Parliament on several occasions. As Minister of Justice in the Provisional Government of 1848, he decreed that justice would henceforth be administered in the name of the French people. The Crémieux Decree of October 1870 granted French citizenship “to the indigenous Jewish inhabitants of Algeria” – Senator for life 1875–1880 - President of the Consistory of France 1843–1845 – Member of Parliament for the Seine 1869–1876, Member of Parliament for Indre-et-Loire 1842–1851.
