SAINT PALAIS-SUR-MER – POLITICS – EUGENE PELLETAN – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1865/1870 – Three-quarter profile portrait, close-up, seated. Work signed by Pierre PETIT. Albumen print, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm, mounted on card. ( * ) Pierre Clément Eugène PELLETAN: born in St Palais on 29 October 1813, died in Paris on 13 December 1884. Writer, journalist, politician. Son of the mayor of Royan during the First Empire and the Restoration, he moved to Paris in 1833. A close friend of George SAND, he became the tutor to her son Maurice. He was an associate of Alphonse de Lamartine. A fierce opponent of Napoleon III. He was initiated into Freemasonry in 1864 in the ‘L’Avenir’ lodge, of which he later became Worshipful Master. He served as a Member of Parliament for the Seine from 1863 to 1870, then for the Bouches-du-Rhône from 1871 to 1876. He was a Senator for the Bouches-du-Rhône from 1876 to 1884. He served as a minister without portfolio in the Government of National Defence on 4 September 1870; and as Minister for Public Education and Fine Arts in 1871. He is counted amongst the ‘founding fathers’ of the Third Republic.
