St DIE / VOSGES / POLITICS - JULES FERRY ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1880, close-up portrait, three-quarter view of the bust, by BACARD Fils, successor and son-in-law of Thiébault in Paris – Albumin bromide on card, visiting-card size, 10.6 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) Jules FERRY: born on 5 April 1832 in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, died on 17 March 1893 in Paris – . A renowned lawyer and statesman who opposed the Second Empire. - In 1870, he was a member of the provisional government and, for a time, Mayor of Paris. In this capacity, he suppressed the insurgents of the Commune. He served several times as Minister for Education and the Fine Arts and was the author of the laws establishing compulsory and free education. He was also the author of laws promoting freedom of assembly and freedom of the press. He served as President of the Council of Ministers on several occasions and promoted French colonial expansion, particularly in Indochina and Tunisia. - He was also a Member of Parliament for the Vosges on numerous occasions between 1869 and 1889, and a Senator for the Vosges from 1891 to 1893.
